Shopify thank you page tracking after checkout.liquid and additional scripts

Checkout.liquid, additional scripts and script tags no longer run on Shopify's checkout and thank you pages. How to track purchases with web pixels instead.

Short answer: Shopify no longer runs checkout.liquid, additional scripts or script tags on its checkout, thank you and order status pages. Conversion tracking now goes through web pixels, which subscribe to customer events such as checkout_completed. Pair the pixel with a server-side copy of each order, keyed on the order id, so purchases the browser misses still reach your ad platforms.

The timeline

DateWhat changed
13 August 2024checkout.liquid stops working on the Information, Shipping and Payment pages (Plus)
28 August 2025checkout.liquid and additional scripts sunset on Thank you and Order status pages (Plus); additional scripts become view-only for other stores
26 August 2026Deadline for all other stores; script tags stop running on the Order status page and stores that had not upgraded were upgraded automatically

What to use instead

  • App pixels: installed by a tracking app, run in Shopify's strict sandbox.
  • Custom pixels: code you add under Settings, Customer events, run in a lax sandbox.
  • Both load on the storefront, checkout, thank you and order status pages, and only when the visitor has given the consent the pixel requires.

Where pixels fall short

checkout_completed fires once per checkout, usually on the thank you page, or on the first upsell page when there is one. If that page fails to load it does not fire at all. Ad blockers and closed tabs can also stop the browser request. A server-side event from Shopify's order webhook, carrying the same event id, fills those gaps without double counting.

How TRACK ATLAS does it

TRACK ATLAS installs an app pixel through its Shopify app and also listens to the order webhooks, so every purchase is sent from the browser and from the server with the order id as event id. Meta and Pinterest keep one copy; TRACK ATLAS also skips a purchase it has already sent.

Questions

Do additional scripts still work on the Shopify thank you page?

No. Additional scripts and checkout.liquid were sunset on the Thank you and Order status pages on 28 August 2025 for Plus stores, and the deadline for all other stores was 26 August 2026.

What replaces them for conversion tracking?

Web pixels: app pixels installed by apps, or custom pixels added under Customer events in the Shopify admin. They load on the storefront, checkout, thank you and order status pages.

Can a pixel miss a purchase?

Yes. checkout_completed fires once per checkout, on the first upsell page if there is one, and does not fire if that page fails to load. A server-side copy from the order webhook covers those gaps.
